Free Apps For Young Composers
I have found two more free apps that allow young students to explore music composition.
Tune Train
The first app is called Tune Train. There are 10 musical worlds available to explore. Each world features a different musical style.
On each beat, you see people high and low. They essentially outline a chord. You use the train to draw a path and select people/notes you want in your

Music Centers
During the week of Thanksgiving Break, I didn't want to start a lesson or unit when I wouldn't see all the classes of the week. So, we experimented with music centers. I have 50 minute classes, so I chose 4 centers. It took about 10 minutes to explain the games and then students travelled in groups and had about 10 minutes at each center. They seemed to enjoy them, so I will definitely try this

Aurasma and Halloween
If you missed my previous post about the Aurasma app, you may want to read that first.
Our PTO sponsors a door decorating contest in conjunction with our trick or treat night. The winner gets $50 to spend on classroom supplies. Last year, I created a door that was linked to instruction with the students writing about how certain musical elements can make spooky music. I did not win the

Dropbox for the Music Teacher
I have fallen in love with Dropbox!
I was first introduced to Dropbox by a colleague. She recorded herself singing some songs for our district honor choir for the students to use when practicing. She shared the audio files with me via Dropbox.
I have also used Dropbox to store sheet music. I scanned the music for the All-State Children's Chorus and uploaded it to my Dropbox so that I would

Monkey Drum App
Monkey Drum-Free App
This is another FREE app that I think will be very useful in the music classroom. The main menu allows you to pick 2 ways to play. This is how the menu looks on an iPhone or iPod. When you click on the center image, you enter the most basic type of play. Here, you can play rhythms and melodies on instruments and when you pause or finish your phrase, the monkey will be a

Rhythm Cat App
Another app I have downloaded for the iPad is Rhythm Cat Free. With the free version, you get 15 levels of rhythms. There is background music that plays and one measure of clicks to count off and tell you when to start playing the rhythms. You hold down the green button to play the rhythms. Here is a screenshot of Level 4.
As you play the rhythms, the notes and rests that you perform
